Clad Plates for Chemical & Petrochemical Plants

Chemical plants handle acids, chlorides and high temperatures that call for reactive metals like titanium, zirconium and tantalum — metals that cannot be fusion welded to steel. Explosion cladding bonds them to a steel base, making large corrosion-resistant equipment affordable.

Applications

  • Reactors, columns and pressure vessels
  • Heat exchanger tube sheets
  • PTA, acetic acid and urea plants
  • Pharmaceutical process vessels

Typical clad materials

  • Titanium Grade 1, 2, 7, 11, 12
  • Zirconium Zr 702 (LO) / Zr 700
  • Tantalum
  • Nickel alloys C-276, C-22, 625
  • Stainless steels 304L, 316L, 321

Frequently Asked Questions

Can titanium or zirconium be clad onto steel?

Yes, by explosion welding. Fusion welding would form brittle intermetallics; explosion welding bonds the metals in the solid state.

How is the bond quality verified?

Every plate gets 100% automated ultrasonic testing plus shear, tensile and bend tests on a traced coupon.
